Ever wonder where the word kindergarten came from? Neither did we, until we learned today is designated by the U.S. Congress as National Kindergarten Recognition Day.
“To recognize the historic tradition of kindergarten in the U.S. and its contribution to preparing children for their educational achievement and experiences.” …So we wondered what is the history of kindergarten?
Kindergarten or “the children’s garden” was founded in 1837 by Friedrich Froebel in Germany. The c…oncept made its way to America where in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1856, the first kindergarten in the U.S. was conducted in German.
Froebel’s founding philosophy rested on four principals: free self-activity, creativity, social participation and motor expression.
So here’s a shout-out to all of those little 5 and 6 year olds who work hard and play hard all year!
